Noam Chomsky writes, “The intellectual has, traditionally, been caught between the conflicting demands of truth and power. He would like to see himself as the man who seeks to discern the truth, to tell the truth as he sees it, to act – collectively where he can, alone where he must – to oppose injustice and oppression, to help bring a better social order into being. If he chooses this path, he can expect to be a lonely creature, disregarded or reviled. If, on the other hand, he brings his talents to the service of power, he can achieve prestige and affluence.”
Over the course of my life, I have discovered this to be the case.
The life of a public intellectual who expresses radical views about politics and spirituality, among other subjects, can be a difficult one. Our society rewards people who support the current system – whose values and views conform to the mainstream media, mesh with corporate or academic institutions. If you explore the reality of the Psyche as well as occult and shamanic realms, you find yourself exiled from most means of financial support. If you propose that Capitalism needs to be fundamentally transformed, as I do, your work will not be published by The New Yorker or The New York Times.
If my ideas have inspired or influenced you, please make a one-time or monthly donation, via PayPal, so I can continue my work. Compared to other professions, writers earn very little, for the most part. In the past, when I experienced rare periods of financial security, I used my resources to create new ventures to give a voice to other writers and visionaries, such as the web magazine Reality Sandwich - which has published over a thousand authors, many for the first time - and The Evolver Network, as well as the literary magazine, Open City. In the future, given the opportunity, I intend to build more platforms for other voices and visions.
